Biddadat is a Seattle-based neo-funk duo bringing an electrifying mix of nostalgia and modernity to the stage. Cameron Brownell (vocals, guitar, production) and Kyle Miller (bass) blend the soul of funk and blues with the energy of progressive rock and electronica. Known for their dynamic performances and playful vibes, Biddadat’s music is about having fun and making you move.
“Biddadat is probably my favorite local group; they’re making what Stevie Wonder would be making if he was growing up now, and it’s sick.” - Dan Ray of Dan’s Tunes (via Elijah Dhavvan at Rain City Collective)
Seattle’s dynamic duo, Biddadat, returns with their sixth multi-song release, Lovesick, an EP that explores the beauty and complexity of human connection. Cameron Brownell (vocals, guitar, production) and Kyle Miller (bass)—Idaho natives who have championed the Seattle music scene for over a decade—deliver a genre-bending soundscape that moves from dreamy introspection to pulsing, danceable rhythms. Featuring collaborations with Desperate Electric and Dylan Hayes, Lovesick is a six-track odyssey of love’s thrills and heartbreaks, set against a vivid musical backdrop that invites listeners to feel every high, low, and in-between.
We begin the EP in the warm rise of a dreamy intro with the eponymous “Lovesick,” inspecting the barren landscape on the EP’s cover, as Brownell’s vocals pull us higher and higher until the humid swells of “Pretend” spill out of the speakers like tropical surf. The waves are warm, but you're surprised by the themes of hope and uncertainty beneath the surface, a song about being single and lost, and pretending to be in love for the sake of companionship.
Colorful lights converge in an otherwise wasted landscape with “Kissin,” co-written and performed with Butte, Montana’s disco duo, Desperate Electric. The song is a throbbing, flashing, skin-to-skin carousel spin about a new romance blossoming out of control a little too fast. It’s fun and scary, and you can’t help but feel the butterflies as you’re swept up on the ride. The fun doesn’t stop there, though. Miller spins you around and flings you out sideways where you’re caught in the bouncy trapeze swing boogie of “Be That Way,” the album’s second collaborative track featuring one of Seattle’s most prolific keyboardists, Dylan Hayes. It’s a cinematic yarn about a partner that won’t commit, feeling like it should take place in the fast-tech future that the 80’s imagined.
The lights go out and you find yourself back in the badlands with “Grind,”a middle finger to the music industry and its social climbing scene that opens like waking up on an unfamiliar couch on a Monday. Just as you start to get your bearings in this frantic landscape, the warm lights come back slow. The monolith above the crossroads hangs undeniable and untarnished in an otherwise blasted world, and we’re bathed in the rich red glow of “Heartbreak,”the final track and the tragic ending to our love story that hits like a rose-colored gravity beam from the mothership of love. As Brownell’s voice reaches out of the perfume haze with “So confused, ‘cause I keep choosing heartbreak, heartbreak,” We can’t help but look at the cover again. The convergence of the paths and the union of the lights, the beautiful, strange, complicated thing hanging there. And above it all, a winking sun that is unsure of whether to rise or set. The story is over, and as you ponder just how an EP of six sad songs managed to make you feel happy, you figure you may as well let that rising intro take you back in for another trip to see if you can figure it out.
